The challenge: To embrace one’s inner artist to capture the beauty of various barn quilts in their rural environment, looking for picturesque settings, not just the barn quilts in mind.
With that challenge in mind, forty-seven entries made up the First Annual Frontier Barn Quilt Photography Contest. Judged by Lisa Clevenger of Lisa’s Photo Creations and Cindy Glessner of the Fulton County Quilt Club, three winners and several honorable mentions were announced.
Angela McKelvy of Warfordsburg took the first prize of $200 with her photo of her landlord’s barn quilt “Pigeon Cove Cross.” Second place and $150 went to Sophie Cutshaw of Mercersburg. Her entry was “Dickey’s Mountain Cross” on the old country store on the Bivens farm. April Leese took third place and collected $100 for her depiction of Glenn Cordell’s “Laurel Leaves of Peace.”
McKelvy and Cutshaw also received honorable mentions along with Kianna Rogers and Leslie Carpenter of Matinsburg, WV and Savannah McKelvy of Warfordsburg.
The photo display was hosted by the Fulton County Library and the Fulton County Arts Council. Prizes were sponsored in part by the VFW Post 655 of McConnellsburg.
The 2018 Barn Quilt Photo Contest begins immediately, giving contestants an opportunity to shoot barn quilt photos throughout all the seasons of the year. More information can be found at the Frontier Barn Quilt Facebook page.
