Scattered throughout Fulton County, visitors will find nearly 150 painted quilts mounted on barns, sheds, homes, and businesses along scenic roadways. The project is called the Frontier Barn Quilt Trail of Fulton County. It is meant to highlight Fulton County’s history, heritage and rural nature. Following three successful bus tours during last year’s Fulton Fall Folk Festival, the Frontier Barn Quilt Committee is sponsoring new tours for this year’s festival. The tours are set for Friday, October 20. They will go a little further afield, covering Taylor and Wells Township in the northern end of the county and Thompson, Bethel and Belfast Townships in the south. Once again some barn quilt owners will be greeting the tour at stops, and several historical sites will be included.

Many new blocks will be seen on these tours since last year’s tours didn’t reach as far. On the way to these more distant locations, some old favorites from last year will be viewed. In addition, the Winegardner School (a one room school restored and owned by the Historical Society) will be visited on the northern route, and Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church and the White Church at Union Cemetery (both providing interesting historical details) will be stops on the southern trip. Along the way other places of historical interest will be pointed out. The northern route will leave at 8:30 AM from the Giant parking lot in McConnellsburg returning around 12 PM. The southern route will leave from the same location at 1 pm. Cost for the tours are $20 for one, or $35 for those who want to go on both tours. A boxed lunch will be available between tours for anyone wanting to grab a bite after, before or between the morning and afternoon tours.
