Ed and Karen Leisinger 4049 BIG COVE TANNERY RD 17212 Municipality: Thompson Township Structure: 3615 GPS: 39.793417 -78.067644 We chose our American Civil War era block titled “Right Hand of Friendship” for its’ feel of patriotism and the beautiful pattern. Our farm dates from the pre-American Civil War era and was owned and farmed for many generations by the Simpson family. During the civil war, Samuel and Mary Simpson lived in the original farm house. The farm was invaded and looted twice by Confederate forces; first on June 24, 1863 during the Gettysburg campaign and again on July 31, 1864 after Confederates burned Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Stolen goods could be replaced , but not the Simpson’s 24 year old son, Jacob Simpson, who before the actual raid, ran to the barn to release and hide the livestock but in the chaos was kicked in the head by a horse and died that day. Little did the Confederates know that Mr. Samuel Simpson was the uncle of Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Generations of the Simpson family and friends are buried on our farm.
